Dr. Rahimi is an all-star cosmetic dentist serving the Calabasas community, and he’s an expert in teeth-whitening procedures.
There are plenty of teeth whitening options available to people today, but Dr. Rahimi wants you to know that not all of them are created equal. Some methods are more effective than others and not everyone is a suitable candidate for every teeth-whitening method that’s out there.
Hence, we’ve put together a list of some key things you should know about various teeth whitening methods.
Compared to in-office teeth-whitening methods, store bought teeth-whitening solutions are less effective, and the effects wear off in a few months. For example, over the counter teeth-whitening toothpastes can only remove surface stains, and they can only lighten teeth color by about one shade. On the other hand, prescription teeth whitening solutions available at our office can lighten your teeth by about 3 to 8 shades.
Over-the-counter whitening strips and gels can vary depending on the brand. The strength will change depending on the amount of peroxide it contains, but the effects will only last for about 4 months.
In-office teeth-whitening procedures can yield dramatic results in just one 30-60-minute appointment, which makes it the quickest way to whiten teeth. During this procedure, a whitening agent containing bleach is applied directly to teeth, and it may be used along with a specialized light, laser or heat. Dramatic results will be seen after one appointment, but some patients may need more than one session to get the results they want.
In addition to not working as well as you intend them to, at home methods may have unforeseen side effects. For example, over the counter whitening trays apply a one-size fits all approach, and ill-fitting trays can irritate your gums by allowing bleaching gel to seep into your gum tissue.
Over-the-counter bleaching methods don’t have the American Dental Association’s seal of approval because the ADA believes that professional consultation is essential for safe and effective teeth-whitening. With that being said, if you’re considering teeth whitening, it’s best to seek out the consultation of an experienced cosmetic dentist, like Dr. Rahimi, before attempting to whiten your teeth.
